CWU & SACU Sign Agreement with TELKOM PDF Print E-mail

Monday, 06 April 2009 23:21

On the 7th August 2008, CWU & SACU resumed talks with Telkom and debates continued for the entire day.

Yesterday (08/08/2008) the parties met to refine the “Pro-Forma” agreement drafted on the 7/8/2008, and one of the key achievements reached by CWU & SACU in this process was being able to convince Telkom negotiators to remove the word “average” from clauses making reference to the 11% and the 0.5% salary increases.

This effectively means that all CWU & SACU members in the Bargaining Unit will get 11%  backdated to the 1st of April 2008 and a further 0.5% salary from the 1st of October 2008 respectively. Parties have agreed to resume and engage on the possibility of backdating the 0.5% to June 2008.

The salary increments will be extended to items with monetary value on the “Total Package” concept applied by Telkom, e.g. Medical aid.

On “Gainsharing” (Another aspect with monetary value to workers), parties have agreed to refer the matter  for Advisory Arbitration, and to further engage on the principles, formula and eligibility of receiving “Gainsharing”. Both matters will be concluded by 30th September 2008.

CWU & SACU signed the agreement with a clear caution to the employer, that the salary increments inclusive (11.5%) is still below the current inflation rate which is standing at 11.6%. The struggle continues when we meet Telkom in the forth coming substantive negotiations, which will include salary increments.

CWU & SACU salute the strength and support demonstrated by its members during the Stay Away from the 1st to 4th August 2008.

SABC 700 Million Deficit Another Justification for the Removal of its Board Members PDF Print E-mail

Monday, 06 April 2009 23:20

Communication Workers Union once again calls on government to immediately invoke the relevant legislation and take immediate action for the removal of the SABC Board Members.

The 700 million deficit reported to the unions by the SABC management is gravely concerning and a clear reflection of “poor management” of the “Public Broadcaster’s” by its corporate leadership, the SABC Board.

The SABC’s convenient excuse that the institution is underfunded cannot and must not be accepted. The SABC also made a call for unions to assist in finding a way of how to deal with the deficit, this is in the first instance – “laughable” and secondly, it justify our call that labour representation on the SABC Board is of paramount importance.

We are optimistic that this time around, our call and that of Cosatu; the SACP and others will be headed by the powers that be.

Communication Workers Union is currently contemplating what course of action may be appropriate to ensure the speedy removal of the SABC Board.

CWU Message of Support at the Internation Labour Conference Held In Iraq 13 – 14 March 2009 PDF Print E-mail

Monday, 06 April 2009 23:19

We are bringing revolutionary and international solidarity greetings from Communication Workers Union in South Africa.

We are deeply humbled and honoured to be part of this historic and momentous event taking place in a country whose people has been subjected to the most devastating political, social and economic conditions, and where human life is brutally compromised for greed and self interests.

Though scientific, biological and natural realities may present us as different in colour; race; religion and creed, we however all remain human beings faced with similar social and economic hardships.

Equally, a workers in a Baghdad factory; a workers in a Japanese bank and workers in a South African mine are all workers faced with similar workplace and employment injustices and indignities.

On behalf of Communication Workers Union in South Africa I wish to pronounce to this “International Iraqi Labour Conference”, that

“Your struggles are our struggles”

“Your pains, are our pains”,…… and so shall…….

“Your victories be our victories”

We are confident that this conference will emerge with a “Radical Roadmap” who’s ultimate goal will be to eradicate all oppressive employment, economic and social laws that governs the Iraqi workers and the Iraqi society in general.

This conference must also among others, emerge with resolutions to heal the scares inflicted by the shameless and barbaric brutality of those who have proven to suffer from an incurable disease for power.

We wish you a successful conference.
